Maximus

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

This is the iPod & the Laptop of 1910. That is roughly 66 years before Apple was founded. This is also a public domain image recently posted on Flickr's Library of Congress Photostream.

Can you imagine how high-tech this set-up must have looked at the time?

RIP Maila Nurmi

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Maila Nurmi, whose "Vampira" TV persona pioneered the spooky-yet-sexy Goth aesthetic, has died, coroner's officials said. She was 85.
Nurmi

Maila Nurmi's Vampira character paved the way for countless other horror-show hosts.

Nurmi died Thursday afternoon at her Hollywood home, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said. The cause of death has not been determined, Corral said.

Nurmi created her Vampira character -- reminiscent of Charles Addams' spooky New Yorker cartoons -- to host horror movie broadcasts on KABC TV in Los Angeles in 1954.

With darkly mascaraed eyes and blood-red lipstick, Nurmi appeared each week in her revealing black dress and slinky fishnets to introduce such films as "Revenge of the Zombies" and "Devil Bat's Daughter."

"The Vampira Show" was canceled after about a year, but Nurmi remained a cult figure among B-movie buffs and is thought to have inspired the vampish Morticia Addams on "The Addams Family," which premiered about 10 years later.

CALIFORNICATION

Californication is a Showtime 12-part series production created by Tom Kapinos and starring David Duchovny as Hank Moody, a troubled novelist whose move to Los Angeles and problems with his job complicate the relationships with his ex-girlfriend Karen (Natascha McElhone) and daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin).

I hoped I was going love this show after watching the pilot episode. I have not been disappointed with a subsequent episode yet. Below is the very first scene from that pilot episode.

Duchovny's character says things about Los Angeles, the people who live there and the creative writing process that have been bouncing around in my brain pan ever since I lived in sunny Cali.

Hank Moody gets away with things we wish we can without serious injury, law suits or jail time. But that, my friends, is the art of fiction.

Congrats to Duchovny on winning the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Hank Moody. Check this series out as soon as its available!

Hadji Girl

While I love this song. If you want to understand why the war is going so badly in Iraq, it may help to examine the recent reaction to "Hadji Girl," the videotaped song about killing Iraqis by U.S. Marine Corporal Joshua Belile. The song became controversial when the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) discovered it on the internet and objected to its lyrics. "Hadji Girl" tells the story of a soldier "out in the sands of Iraq / And we were under attack":
